A significant milestone was reached by Kia Ora Stud this year with the renowned farm in the Segenhoe Valley celebrating 100 years of breeding thoroughbreds.
Since 1914 when successful businessman Percy Miller purchased the farm and began breeding horses, Kia Ora has established a reputation for producing elite racehorses. Six Melbourne Cup winners, five Cox Plate winners and 15 Derby winners lead a host of feature race winners to come off the farm.
The New Year will see Kia Ora achieve another significant milestone with its first-ever draft of Kia Ora bred and owned yearlings going under the hammer at the Magic Millions yearling sale on the Gold Coast. The draft consists of seven yearlings by the country’s leading stallions and most-promising young stallions.
Alex Kingston, Kia Ora Stud Manager said, “We are delighted to be offering a draft of yearlings at the Magic Millions for the first time in Kia Ora’s long and proud history. It is a quality draft of yearlings we feel are particularly suited to the Gold Coast market.”
Four colts by Fastnet Rock, Street Cry, Sebring and So You Think make up the draft along with two Sebring fillies and a More Than Ready filly.
“Lot 563 Reggae/Street Cry is a mature well balanced, strong colt with a big athletic walk. He has a lot of presence and is a precocious colt. He has a great attitude. He has a good hindquarter, hip and hind leg.”
“The other stand out colt is lot 207 Dorabella/So You Think, he has good size, scope and strength he has a huge athletic walk (a walk with swagger) He is a precocious colt with a great outlook and very good head.”
“Our fillies are all first foals, out of these lot 569 Rock of Fortune/More than Ready has great quality. She is out of Rock of Fortune who is by Fastnet Rock and this filly looks like a Fastnet Rock. She has a great body, good hindquarter, hip/hind leg and a great head. Overall she is a well-balanced mature filly with a good active walk.”
